Dutch photographer Katja Bouwman, now based in Zurich, presents a compelling collection of black and white street photography featured by Edge of Humanity Magazine. Born and raised in the Netherlands, Bouwman’s relationship with photography began early, during her teenage years, when she converted her family bathroom into a darkroom using garbage bags to block out light.
After moving to Switzerland in 2003, Bouwman continued exploring photography, gradually shaping her visual language. In 2023, she made a creative shift from color to black and white, a transition that marked the beginning of her deep engagement with street photography. She describes the practice as a form of meditation — an act of mindfulness that combines observation and focus.
Her photographs capture fleeting moments of everyday life, balancing light and shadow to reveal the rhythm of urban existence. Through this approach, Bouwman shares a contemplative and personal vision of the world, one that values stillness and presence amid the constant motion of city life. Her work transforms ordinary street scenes into spaces for reflection, inviting viewers to pause and connect with the subtleties that often go unnoticed.
