In her project Coven, Dutch visual artist Maartje Punt explores the unique spirit of New Orleans—a city defined by contrasts. Through her lens, Punt captures both the visible and unseen forces that shape the city: the vibrant energy of its people, the pulsing nightlife, the echoes of voodoo and ghost stories, and the deep historical shadows of slavery. Her work reflects a continuous dialogue between light and darkness, spirituality and reality, joy and sorrow—elements that together form the soul of New Orleans.
All images in Coven were photographed using an iPhone, a deliberate choice that underscores Punt’s focus on immediacy and accessibility in her creative process. She values the ability to capture the moment over the technical medium, noting that creativity transcends equipment.
