The series documents a journey across China during the 1980s, when public transportation such as buses, trains, horse and carriage and bicycles were central to daily movement. The photographs were taken while traveling from Xinjiang to Shenzhen, after crossing the Karakoram Highway from Pakistan, eventually leading to Hong Kong. Shot on grainy film and captured while moving through unfamiliar places, the images record everyday encounters and moments from a period that reflects a very different China than today.
