Bees and other pollinating insects play an essential role in ecosystems. A third of all our food depends on their pollination.

Native Irish Black Honey Bees are under threat in many parts of Ireland and Europe from imported strains of the honey bee.

I have documented a working day on the Galtee Honey Farm. The farm is run by the Mac Giolla Codas family and it was established in 1970.  They have about 150 hives of honey bees located throughout the Galtee Vee Valley, over the counties of Cork, Limerick and Tipperary. They are committed to promoting the conservation of the native honey bees of Ireland, known as ‘Black Bees’.
