Dear Åpati, the purple
on the tips of my great
toes is almost gone now.
Remember?
You said I’ll be naked
on the table,
I should look fabulous.
Come to Asbury Park.
You knelt, put on
my battle paint,
my toes
nacreous grapes.
Then, you painted
my eyes shut, my mouth
closed with goodbye.
So unexpected.
They said I bled a lot.
Did you wonder?
Between delusions and pain
I dreamt you called.
I need to go now, Åpati.
You see, there were
complications. Today
I’ll be naked again.
They’ll push the plunger,
sweet taste of propofol,
milk of amnesia. Truth is,
it’s disappointingly short-lived.
I’ll look last at my toes.
The concluding bit of purple
on an outgrown nail. I’ll clip it.
Like you.
Without purple
I’ll be fabulous.
