Life flows easily when you are prepared. Being able to foresee what is next and preparing has significant value to ones well being. Excessive preparedness can lead to “what ifs” and continuous vigilance can make life miserable.
There is a difference between changing a bald tire that otherwise would blow during driving and mentally preparing for the worse possible scenario after your love one did not arrive for an event, or had an negative medical diagnosis.
The tire is real, if left alone it will blow. If your cousin is late there is a minute chance of alien abduction and your sister’s diabetes will not kill her in an instant. The problem with this accelerated imagination is the pain it causes the individual trying to have an exit plan for all the possible ways a situation can go south.
The film ‘A Beautiful Mind’ is about a mathematician suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. In one of the scenes, the mathematician asks a student to verify the presence of a man beside him.
Work with what you know to be real can help to filter out the ‘what ifs’. If you are having indigestion there is a higher chance that the food you ate wasn’t cooked right and you were not poisoned by your neighbor. The power going off in your home does not translate into a complete city blackout.
If the “what ifs” seem familiar and you find yourself giving two negative outcomes for a specific issue, stop and hold on to the solid facts you have in hand and toss out your pessimistic predictions.
