Focus on the giant dense shade in the field,
you and I sit under the tree,
in the distance, lazy clouds drift,
by the roadside, graves gleam silver.
My head rests upon your lap,
on closing my eyes, I can sense your bitter breath,
quietly opening them, I see
in your golden locks draping over my cheek,
new shoots and jewels of fresh life.
My hands feel rough and coarse like bark,
I know the smoothness of silk as well as its coolness,
but you haven’t worn them for a long time,
and I’ve long abandoned books in the ever-deepening grass,
pausing the chirping of insects,
the water bottle spilled on the ground,
farm tools scattered around,
the white horse we rode here has already wandered away lost in thought.
The softening shadow of the tree inches its way around, my dear,
shall we follow?
If your hair flutters,
it mustn’t be from my fingers,
which already sprouted beneath the pale grass roots,
if there are footsteps moving about at night, don’t fear,
they are our friends who have long departed from this world, like a great army,
silently encircling our tree adorned with stars and ploughshares.
