Written by Kyle Wahl
Written about the perils of being consumed by excess in all things while life moves forward at a dizzying pace. DISCLAIMER: This poem contains minimal foul language
The cigarette burns, and the oak barrel turns.
And the taste has washed over your brain.
And quenching the thirst has soothed your pain.
Goddamn is it ever gonna rain?
You take what you earn, but still never learn.
Faster still to feel the thrill.
Slower yet let’s make a bet.
Oh look, I found my cigarettes.
Uncork the amber, draw a line in the sand.
And lie to yourself that you’ll make your stand.
With a gust, the wind takes your hunger –
Fuck, I wish that I was younger.
While quick as a spark yet keen as a spade,
Another whiskey rocks is already made.
So take that sip smoothly, then drink it down quick –
Because the clock in your heart has started to tick.
The burn and the pain have taken this trick.
