A Porch & A Pen is where Laura Lea Cupp writes plainspoken, porch-tested stories about healing, humor, and small-town survival—mess and magic included.
Age Gaps and Side-Eyes: Loving Berry Anyway
Berry and I’ve been together for nearly fourteen years. Fourteen years of hallway weddings, camping setups that defy logic, and the kind of love that doesn’t always look like it fits on paper.
Because we’re an age-gap couple. And people had opinions.
At first, the judgment was loud. Side-eyes. Snide comments. Questions disguised as concern. Folks who thought they knew better. Thought they knew us. Thought they had the right to decide what love should look like.
But they didn’t know me. Not really.
I’ve always been an old soul—raised with grit, old music, and ‘modern conveniences’ that were already a generation behind. I could operate 8-tracks and vinyls, knew how to make a meal stretch, and how to read a room like a hymnbook. I didn’t grow up chasing trends—I grew up learning how to hold on. So when Berry came along, steady and kind, with hands that build and a heart that stays—I knew.
They didn’t see the way Berry steadies me. The way he listens when I ramble, stays when staying isn’t easy, and holds space for every version of me—grieving daughter, holler girl, gospel-hearted wife.
They didn’t see the hallway wedding. No flowers, no fanfare. Just me in a dress, Berry waiting, and daddy—who wasn’t walking fast enough. I reached back and tugged him forward. We didn’t laugh at the time. We didn’t notice. But when the pictures came back, there it was: me pulling Daddy down the “aisle,”. That photo? It’s Berry’s favorite. Not because it’s perfect. But because it’s real. It’s us.
Berry’s my partner, my collaborator, my comfort. He’s held me through grief, through loss, through the kind of days that make you question everything. And still—he’s here. We’re here.
And I don’t give a damn what anyone says.
Because love isn’t about matching birth years. It’s about matching hearts. It’s about showing up, day after day, even when the world doesn’t understand. Especially then.
I’ll love Berry for…always. Not because it’s easy or because it’s perfect. But because it’s ours. And that’s more than enough.
