Written by Stephan van der Merwe
Last time it was another cat
that for an hour I “saved”
from the gang of snapping tearers
with a shout and a late cut
with a cricket bat
But then with just a bit of tears
there was a midnight grave
and a quiet word
and that was that
Today it came closer
as I clutched my club at four
and threw myself in the middle
of the fray
swinging away
I saved him
and cried for his pain
as he lay and will remain
for many days
