I was going to say goodbye,
seemed like the right thing
to do for a long time, I mean
it had ended relatively well
all things considered, no one
was at fault, there wasn’t any
big trauma, so saying goodbye
seemed to make sense, but
then there was that unexpected
exchange with a little back and forth,
that came as a little surprise
with some attitude that didn’t seem called for
given nothing had happened in ages
and it took me by surprise
and I realized that not only did I
not really know who you were
but that you didn’t really know
who I was either
and that was a shock to me
and it was totally clear that there
was no need for anything more –
I was totally wrong in thinking
I should say goodbye, because
I realized there was no way
in the entire broken world that
I was going to say goodbye.
