Yves Cauchon discovered photography in the early 2000s, as an extension of a cinematic culture that has durably shaped his vision. Cinema fostered in him a particular sensitivity to framing, composition, and the interplay of light, notably through a chiaroscuro aesthetic inherited from films that left a lasting impression on him, such as Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola and In the Mood for Love by Wong Kar-wai.

Photography gradually established itself as a privileged space for contemplation and expression, enabling him to resonate with the world and capture its most fleeting moments. A discreet wanderer of urban spaces and their margins, Yves Cauchon photographs during suspended hours of the day, when light becomes scarce or oblique. His work is characterized by a measured distance, where his gaze upon reality remains both sensitive and inquisitive, attentive to the place of human beings within their environment.

His practice is rooted in an introspective approach, akin to an inner quest. Through a precise use of available light—whether emanating from a nocturnal streetlamp or gently brushing forms at dawn—he reveals fragile and ephemeral balances. His images capture those transitional moments when the visible briefly takes shape before fading away, allowing an open, silent narrative to emerge, one to which the viewer is invited.

A graduate of the École Polytechnique, Paris, Yves Cauchon lives and works in Paris.
