The experience of living abroad forced me to redefine not only who I am, but perhaps more strikingly, who I am not. The sense of detachment, of no longer belonging, grew powerful enough to reshape my self-perception.

I came to see culture as a collection of shared habits and rituals existing outside of me, and realized I was neither bound by those of my homeland nor fully absorbed into those of the society I had entered. The pronoun we slipped away; only I remained, untethered and apart.

This separation carried both liberation and risk. Freed from the weight of inherited identity, I could encounter others without judgement, expectation, or the burden of my own history. Yet ballast, once lost, also means surrendering the comfort of gravity beneath your feet.

Exile traces this tension between belonging and estrangement, freedom and uncertainty, ground and air. The photographs inhabit a space between soaring and drifting, exploring what remains when familiar points of reference disappear and identity must be rebuilt anew.

Artist Statement

My practice begins with photography but extends beyond the photographic image itself. I am interested in the ways identity, memory, and personal experience are shaped through absence as much as presence. Rather than treating the photograph as a fixed record, I approach it as a space for reflection, ambiguity, and transformation.

A lasting influence on my thinking has been the work of Witold Gombrowicz and his observations on how identity is formed through our encounters with others. We constantly negotiate who we are, adopting and shedding different roles and forms. This tension between the inner self and the identities imposed from outside runs throughout my work.

Working primarily in monochrome, I create images that occupy a space between reality and imagination. I am drawn to themes of memory, belonging, vulnerability, and the traces left by lived experience. Whether through photography alone or through physical interventions into the image surface, my ultimate goal is to create works that invite contemplation and emotional engagement.

Biography

JJ Jordan is a London-based fine art photographer whose work explores identity, memory, belonging, and the ways in which the self is shaped through encounters with others. Influenced by the writings of Witold Gombrowicz, he approaches photography as a means of questioning fixed definitions of who we are and how we come to know ourselves.

Working primarily in monochrome, Jordan creates images that balance documentary observation with metaphor and psychological space. His practice often extends beyond the photographic surface through material interventions, layering, and experimentation with alternative processes, including cyanotype.

His work has been exhibited in group exhibitions in London, Madrid, Paris, and Fréjus, and has been recognized in the British Journal of Photography's Portrait of Britain competition. Through photography and photographic objects, he investigates the unstable territory between personal experience and collective identity.
