Observations is an ongoing photographic series created with an iPhone. Its portability and immediacy make it possible to capture unanticipated moments as they unfold. Without the formality of carrying a traditional camera, the work embraces chance encounters and everyday scenes, revealing moments of beauty, humor, and quiet reflection hidden within ordinary life.

Arturo explores the tension between control and accident—the unplanned moments that emerge within rigorously designed environments. As an architect, he shaped space through precision and intent. Photography allows him to relinquish that control, moving instead through instinct, chance, and presence.

He captures spaces where human life subtly interrupts geometry: shifts of light, traces of use, and fragments that resist formal design. These images are not merely documents of architecture but emotional responses to it. By focusing on what escapes planning, Arturo reveals the “emotional residue” embedded within built forms, transforming static structures into sites of vulnerability, memory, and lived experience.

Born in Mexico and raised in the quiet landscapes of small-town Iowa, Arturo’s perspective is shaped by a dual sensitivity to cultural density and spatial restraint. After studying at the University of Iowa and the University of Minnesota, he founded Archon Design in 1991, a multidisciplinary studio grounded in a holistic design approach.

Introduced to photography at fourteen, Arturo embraced it to capture fleeting moments. Disillusioned after his camera was stolen as a teenager, he stepped away from the medium, later pursuing architecture, where he discovered a need to experience space in a personal, introspective way—a way that blueprints could never allow. Years later, photography drew him back, offering an immediate way to “design” a visual experience and reawaken a lost form of expression. His work is at times intentionally minimalist, seeking the silence within a space—the atmospheric moments that are often overlooked by those who view buildings as purely functional objects. This sensibility extends into his street photography, where light, architecture, and human presence converge to capture intimate moments and the emotional resonance of everyday life.

Self-taught in photography, Arturo’s visual approach focuses on capturing spontaneous, unguarded moments without allegiance to formal conventions. This distance from institutional training has allowed him to develop an intuitive language guided by observation over technique and responsiveness over control, offering personal insight into the life that surrounds him. His work has been exhibited internationally and was recently recognized with Gold (2025) and Silver (2025) Medals from the Maghreb Photography Awards.
