Located in the Piney Woods of East Texas along the Texas–Louisiana border, Caddo Lake offers a striking departure from the landscapes most often associated with Texas. Its mysterious waterways, towering cypress trees, reflective surfaces, and shifting light create an environment that feels both intimate and otherworldly.
This body of work explores Caddo Lake as a reminder of the remarkable diversity of the Texas landscape. Far removed from the busy cities, wide-open spaces, dry plains, and rugged terrain often used to define the state, Caddo reveals a quieter, more atmospheric Texas—one shaped by water, forest, shadow, and reflection.
Through photography, I seek to capture the distinctive character of this place and the subtle changes observed in my annual travels to this magical place.

Artist Statement: Photography, for me, has always been a way of holding on to time. As my children grew up before my eyes, I found myself increasingly aware of how quickly the moments of childhood disappeared. Photography became a way to pause those fleeting moments—to freeze a particular expression, a gesture, a place, or a feeling before it changed forever. Each photograph became more than a record of what I saw; it became a way of preserving a moment that could never be experienced in quite the same way again. That desire to capture and preserve time continues to shape the way I see the world. I am drawn to moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed, looking for something visually captivating in both the extraordinary and the everyday. Travel naturally provides opportunities to encounter traditionally beautiful landscapes, architecture, and unfamiliar places, but I am equally interested in discovering beauty in my own surroundings—the light falling across a familiar room, an unexpected composition on a neighborhood walk, or an ordinary scene transformed by color, shadow, or timing. My goal is not simply to photograph beautiful things, but to notice beauty. I look for the moments when light, color, texture, shape, and emotion come together in a way that makes me stop and look more closely. Ultimately, photography allows me to slow down time. It is a way of remembering where I have been, who I have loved, and what I have seen—and of reminding myself that beauty can exist anywhere, if I take the time to notice it. Bio: A retired CPA, Gwen Williams brings to her photographic practice a deep appreciation for observation, detail, and the passage of time. Her work is rooted in a desire to pause moments that are inherently fleeting and to preserve the visual experiences that might otherwise disappear. As a mother of two grown children and grandmother of one, she became acutely aware of the speed with which life changes. Photography offered a means of slowing that process—to hold onto an otherwise ordinary moment and transform it into something enduring. She lives with her husband in the Texas Hill Country, where the landscape and rhythms of daily life provide an ongoing source of inspiration. Her practice moves fluidly between the traditionally beautiful places encountered through travel and the quieter beauty found close to home. Her work has been exhibited at the Washington Gallery in Waco, Texas, and included in Sacred Spaces, an online exhibition hosted by Sheography.com Through her photography, she continues to explore the relationship between place, memory, and time, inviting the viewer to pause and look more closely at the beauty within a moment.
