Honey J Walker’s project The Art Of Maiko explores the traditions and history behind Geiko, Maiko and Geisha culture in Japan. The series reflects the photographer’s long-standing fascination with the subject, which began after reading Memoirs Of A Geisha and continued through several visits to Japan. The project highlights the dedication required to become a Geiko, including the intense Maiko training program and the disciplined life devoted to traditional arts such as dance, music, tea ceremony and conversation. Walker’s work aims to portray these women as intelligent and dedicated artists while respectfully acknowledging their cultural history.
