In Within These Walls, Ora Buerkli documents daily life inside Magdenau convent in eastern Switzerland, where a small and aging community of nuns has declined from around 50 sisters to 12. Through repeated visits, Buerkli gained the nuns’ trust and photographed prayer, household routines, shared meals, celebrations, friendships, disagreements, humor, and companionship. The project allowed her to move beyond assumptions about convent life and observe the community’s everyday experiences, while documenting a way of life that is becoming increasingly small.
