Lost in Kyoto is a photo essay published by Edge of Humanity Magazine that explores the dense atmosphere of Kyoto as shaped by over 1,200 years of history. The series reflects on the accumulation of human experience in the ancient city, including battles, loss, prayers, joys, and struggles, understood not as distant records but as something living and present. The project approaches history as a living entity that breathes and carries weight through time, embedded in the land and its air.
The photographer, Yasuhiro Ogawa, was born in Kanagawa, Japan in 1968 and holds a B.A. in English literature from Kanagawa University. He began photographing in his early twenties and started his professional career in 2000. Through this long-term project, Ogawa focuses on visualizing history as something cultivated through everyday life rather than as a surface narrative, emphasizing the persistence and presence of time within Kyoto.
