Ton Schless’s Drought documents Scot and Jill, a cattle-farming couple in southern Utah confronting the human consequences of prolonged drought. Beginning in 2021, Schless photographed their land, cattle, work, and family life as water scarcity and declining forage reduced Scot’s Black Angus herd from about 450 cattle to 35 mother cows by 2026. The series examines how drought affects farming, finances, daily life, and family, while emphasizing resilience, connection to the land, faith, and hope for the future. Schless chose black and white to emphasize the austere landscape and relationships among people, animals, and land.
