Is happiness for everyone?

I’m not referring to the right to pursue happiness, but the understanding of what happiness is and what it takes to be happy.

Our happiness’ goals change as we develop. Daily environment and social interactions shape our views, the life we have, and the existence we target.

“I work hard, I deserve expensive things”

Know what you want, strategize, and aim for success by focusing. Ambition is a good tool, but do not get lost between the perception of general success and inner happiness. Happiness is hidden and success is in the eye of the beholder. You will find, that the most precious moments of happiness, demand very little success and money.

In Indonesia, we encountered people living by the road that we were traveling. The small family of five worked the land. Toothless peasants packing the largest smile I have ever seen. Serenity, I can never grasp. They were happy!

It is impossible for a happy person to be happy all the time. As life goes on, so does the emotional ups and downs which carries happy and unhappy moments. Conversely, the Brazilian singer and songwriter Odair Jose writes:

“Happiness

Doesn’t exist

What exist in life

Are moments of happiness”

Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius writes:

“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts: therefore, guard accordingly, and take care that you entertain no notions unsuitable to virtue and reasonable nature.”

Can money buy happiness?

People earning between $60,000 and $75,000 per year are the happiest. Those making $200,000 are not any jollier than the ones earning $95,000 per year.

So, can we really buy happiness, or must we find it ourselves?
